The Rest Of Our Christmas Break

Creating Family Memories

Extended Christmas Vacation

I am so thankful that I added an extra week of vacation into our plans. I guess God knew that we would need the extra time to rest and enjoy each other and our Christmas gifts before life kicks into high gear again.

I don't know if I have ever told you this, but I don't really like high gear. I prefer the quiet and the calm over the hustle and the bustle. I am a country girl stuck smack dab right in the middle of the city, but I am learning to make the best of it.

New Year's Eve

On New Year's Eve day I had the pleasure of sitting with Moses while he explored his new acrylic painting set. He had a very enjoyable time. Even with me supervising, he still ended up with paint on the couch, the carpet, and all over one of his shirts (which I threw out, but he doesn't know that - and hopefully won't if no one tells him).

Then we had a quiet evening on New Years Eve. It was just my mama, the big kids, and Jonah and I. Thankfully, the twins slept through it all. We watched Mr. Popper's Penguins and ate natchos. The movie was very different from the book. I might have more to say about this later, but we'll see.

Taking Down The Tree

We took down our Christmas ornaments and our fake tree on Wednesday. It was kind of sad taking down the tree, but it was nice to chat with my hubby about all the things we want to change or improve for next year. Remember how I said I wanted to be more prepared for next Christmas?  I am actually really looking forward to Christmas next year, already, I know!

Sunflower Schoolhouse Redesign

Oh and I keep forgetting to tell you that I redesigned Sunflower Schoolhouse. I wanted to write that great, amazing post announcing that I completely redid the look and layout of the blog, but between sickness and preparing for school next week, I just keep forgetting. Please come check it out and let me know what you think. Don't forget to check out Honeycomb Design Studio.

My Day At The Homeschool Classroom

I am also writing today over at the Homeschool Classroom about How To Slow Down After A Busy Holiday Season. I wrote this before Christmas, know that I would need it.

Weekly Wrap-Up

And lastly, I am linking up today with the Weekly Wrap-Up from Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers. Check out what is going on in the lives of other homeschooling families as they come together and share their Weekly Wrap-Ups.

Oh, and before I forget...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Weekly Wrap Up

This week was a crazy busy week even though it was our second week of spring break. We took a break from the books and changed things up by revisiting our Trip Across Canada and exploring our new art DVD's.

A Trip Across Canada

We started our Trip Across Canada Study again and it went surprisingly well. The reason that I say that is because all the big boys cooperated and participated in a group discussion and exchange of ideas without anyone totally freaking out. To me this is a sign of significant growth. This was the reason that we took a break from group activities (because nothing got done!).

I will be posting weekly about our Trip Across Canada. Our travel brochures have already started arriving and we are very excited.

I am currently updating the links to the online study. I am also putting it all together as an ebook jam packed with loads of fun activities and book recommendations that will be available for sale eventually. I am aiming for the end of June.

Art on Dvd

Not too long ago I asked if anyone had any suggestions for art lessons on DVD for me to use specifically with Moses, but with all the kids too. I was so excited to be asked to review some art lessons on DVD. We have been watching those DVD's this week (and we are really enjoying them) and those reviews will be coming soon.

Occupational Therapy

On Friday, we had our quietest and calmest OT visit in a long time. Our OT is amazing. We love her to pieces and we look forward to her coming every two weeks. Right now we are working on Elisha pacing himself and asking for help before he falls apart (really hard for him sometimes). We are making excellent progress.

Portfolio Visit

On Friday, we also had our last 2nd term portfolio visit. I can't believe how quickly this year is going by. We have not made as much progress as I would have liked, so we will need to kick some serious but this last term (from now until June 15th). We will then spend the summer finishing off everything that didn't get done before we will move up to the next grade levels.

Surprise Birthday Party Success!

My oldest son turned 11 on Thursday and we were able to pull off a surprise party for him on Friday afternoon. This was the first time I have ever even attempted a surprise party for any of the kids (we may never do it again). We decided to try a surprise party for Elisha because the anxiety of the anticipation is almost unbearable for him and us.

When he came home from spending the afternoon with grandma and grandpa (and visiting the IMAX) he was very surprised to find all his cousins and a decorated house.

I am happy to report that the party was fun and went off without incident. There were 6 adults and 9 kids in our small townhouse. It was loud, very loud, and it took the kids forever to wind down after, but it was a blast.

It is a good thing that we saved the chocolate cupcakes until the very end. Can I just tell you how much I love my eggless, dairyless chocolate cake recipe? Well, I do. I will have to blog about it some time.

Winding Down Today

As much anxiety as there is leading up to birthdays, there is almost as much coming down from the high for Elisha. He has had a hard time occupying himself and settling into "normal" life again. I think this is a normal part of his autism and ADHD. He craves routines even when he fights them.

Today we are winding down and just hanging out having a calm day at home. For the boys this means Saturday morning cartoons, movies, and a little bit of xBox.

I have been finishing up with a client and I have some graphic design samples to finish preparing for a potential client (can we say, really excited!) so I have been working hard at those and can't wait to present them.

Our Next Animation

Have you checked out the trailer in the sidebar? It is short and sweet and there will be more trailers coming as we work hard to get the animation finished. Have a look and let me know what you think.

I am linking up to Weekly Wrap Up.

So what did you do this week?

Weekly Wrap Up – meme

Here is a small snippet of our last TWO weeks in point form.

  • I had tonsillitis last week.
  • Which was followed by strep throat this week.
  • Which still hasn't healed and will require more medication, but we got snowed in, so I won't get back to the clinic until Monday.
  • We have been decluttering the house again (do we ever stop?) and I will have some posts about that for you soon.
  • Our basement has a new window. (energy upgrades)
  • Our new hot water tank has a new air intake valve (aka big hole on the side of the house to let air in - now making the house very cold).
  • We had a day of yard work last week which was a good thing because...
  • We got a foot and a half of snow this week.
  • We moved all the homeschool workboxes up to the master bedroom because I have been doing the one on one lessons in there anyways (which has been working much better and may just end up being a blog post).
  • And finally my post was up at the homeschool classroom this week.

I am linking this post up with the weekly wrap up.

What has been happening in your homeschool lately?

Weekly Wrap-up

I know that I haven't been around for a very long time and I apologize for that. I thought that the perfect way to jump back in was to give you a short recap of our life this past week.

Injury

Malachi and Moses hurt their backs at an indoor play area at a local fast food restaurant. Which involved a trip to the clinic and a trip back to the restaurant to report it. They have offered free meals as compensation.

Illness

I think we picked up some germs at the clinic because Moses ended up sick with the flu and the twins ended up sick with bad colds (drippy noses and coughs).

Homeschool

We had a couple of productive days of school this week, but the sickies meant we had a pretty miserable second week back to school.

We have been trying a modified workbox system and a weekly with our homeschooling and it has been working very well. One week we work on Bible, Math, and Science and the next week we work on Bible, English, Spelling, and Reading. As usual, our school schedule is always being tweaked.

Blog Changes Coming

Just a heads up to let you know that there are MAJOR changes coming to the blog AGAIN. The site is being completely redesigned to make it more readable and searchable. I have a fun new look for you and I can't wait to share it. I am not making any promises about when the new design will be up and running, but it shouldn't be too long now.

Talk to you all soon.

Weekly Wrap-Up

I always find it interesting when I stop and take a look back at the week. This week had a lot going on as you'll see.

Visiting Nana

We drove over to the nursing home to visit my Nana on Sunday. Had a very nice visit with her. She had me pray with her and we both cried. I don't believe my Nana has much time left. She is fragile and very thin. Please pray with me that when it is her time she will go peacefully and painlessly.

Indoor Play Place Fun

Went to the indoor play place (after the nursing home) so the kids could play and we could visit with Grandma and Grandpa. The kids loved it. The twins were finally almost big enough to play. I have enough pictures for a post (so watch for it).

Flat Tire

We were going to go visit my sister (after the play place) and discovered that we had a flat tire. After some phoning later in the week we discovered that we can get it replaced with a used one for fairly cheap, but for now it sits.

Art Fun

We did a fun art project this week. I have enough pictures for a post (so watch for it too).

The Airplane Is Still Missing in Alaska

We ask for your continued prayers. Friends of ours were on a plane that went missing in Alaska – FOURTEEN DAYS AGO! You can visit the website that was set up by the family. Alaska Search Update.

My Aunt Is Coming To Victoria

My mom's sister is coming for the week to spend some time with my Nana.  I am excited to see her again and looking forward to some great conversations and memory making moments.

Sweet Pea and Me

Yesterday Hosanna spent the day nursing and complaining of a sore mouth. She is two so we didn't know what she meant. Was she teething? Did she have a sore throat? I don't know what was going on, but she was miserable and wanting to nurse constantly. This morning, I woke up with a sore throat. Ah, now I understand. So, I will nurse little Sweet Pea as much as she needs. (Update: All the little people and big people in the house are now sick with a cold, we are praying it passes quickly).

My Day At the Mob

Today is my day at The M.O.B. Society. Make sure you hop over and read my post They Love The Dirt, But Not The Bath (but not before you leave some comments here, pretty please).
