Reading Trim Healthy Mama

I’m still reading my digital copy of Trim Healthy Mama. I am encouraged and inspired. I need more hours in my day just to read it. So, here I am in bed, at 8pm on a Sunday night, getting ready to read as much as I can before I fall asleep.

My goal is to have the majority of the book read by the time we get groceries on the 20th. That gives me a week and a bit to fit in 600 more pages of reading before I need to write a grocery list and start putting this new plan into action.

Can you tell that I am one who likes to research and have the big picture before diving in head first? I have purposely tried to work on my weight a few times in my life and had great success. The best was about 17 years ago when I lost over 90lbs eating low carb and walking and swimming. I had a long period of time where I felt healthy and I was taking good care of myself.

Then I got married, pregnant, and distracted. I did try again to work on my weight when my 3 oldest were getting bigger and I ended up pregnant with twins and distracted again. Over the last 15 years, I have spent almost 3 years pregnant and 11 of them breastfeeding. I am NOT making excuses. Those things should not have prevented me from working on my weight, but for whatever reason they did.

I have gained a significant amount of weight over the last 15 years and the last 5 years since the twins were born have been the most difficult, due to my current health issues (mentioned in a previous post).

I know that people often have a stereo type of those who are overweight, but I do not sit home and eat all day. Here is the low down on me. I eat an average amount of food at each meal. I don’t like breakfast unless it is protein/fat. I often skip breakfast and lunch. I don’t generally snack between meals (which means I can go from getting up until dinner without eating anything). I don’t drink near enough water. I drink way too much coffee 2-4 cups per day (2 cream, 1 sugar). I like coke (but I am willing to give it up). I hate climbing my steep stairs. I crave dark chocolate and potato chips. Other sweets or junky stuff, I can take or leave. I like a bedtime snack. I do like the Wendy’s Baconator, but I could probably still enjoy it without the bun and hold the fries and coke.

The thing that intrigued me most about this plan is that I have always known that I lose best on low carb. They (THM) are not asking me to give up fat, protein, or chocolate. If I can find interesting ways to incorporate more veggies and other foods into a mostly low carb diet, then I know that I can make this work for our whole family. I might be able to make food more enjoyable than it has been for the past several years.

If you have been reading here for any length of time, you know that we have tried gluten free/casein free to help our son’s autism. Although he is currently mostly dairy free, he still has other food likes and dislikes. Then we had the twins and Hosanna had horrendous allergies and skin issues, so we had to give up dairy, eggs, and peanuts. Moses also has allergies to shellfish and mushrooms. Navigating food has been stressful and I put my needs on the back burner. How was I going to enjoy food when it had so much emotion wrapped up in it? I gave up enjoying food. We just cooked what worked and made sure everyone got full. Food is fuel (which is not bad, just really boring).

I have to be honest with you though. I really want to enjoy food again. I used to love cooking and baking and I want to enjoy it again. I used to love creating interesting meals that tasted good and I want to do that again too. My biggest goal (and it is a tall order) for Trim Healthy Mama, is to be inspired again. I want to be inspired with food that looks and tastes good, that no one complains about, and that everyone can actually safely eat. I have high hopes for a new start.

My husband says he wants a “Trim Healthy Family,” so that is what I am going for.

First Impressions

My print copy of Trim Healthy Mama is in the mail, but I realized last night that I could purchase a digital copy and read while I am waiting. The thought of only working off a digital copy for highlighting, underling, and scrolling for recipes was why I purchased paper copy (I opted for hardcover), but there was no reason why I could not purchase a digital copy to just “read” and get familiar with the whole concept.

I went and purchased the download directly from Trim Healthy Mama (they have a ton of different options). Then I had to go into my paypal email and find the email to download the ebook. Phew. I finally had the ebook loaded on the computer. Then I realized, that while it would be doable, it was not idea. I wanted to read on my tablet (Nexus 7).

So, I opened the email on my tablet and downloaded the PDF. Then my tablet says it cannot read it, but I know this is only because there is no default PDF reader and I have to go find one (I chose Adobe). Once I had that installed, I was able to get the PDF open and start reading.

I read thirty pages before I could not keep my eyes open any longer. The book is easy to read. It feels like the authors are talking directly to me. It is confirming things I already know and have learned over the years. I cannot wait to read more.

I ordered a print copy of Trim Healthy Mama from Christianbook.com! It should arrive early next week. I got so excited about the possibility of change (while writing this post) that I went and purchased a PDF copy too, so I can get started reading right away.

Okay, are you ready?

So, let’s be honest. I am overweight. Very overweight. I know that. The last time I started to work on my weight and was actually making some progress, I got pregnant with twins (they will turn 6 this year).

Instead of continuing to work on my weight during their pregnancy and onwards, I stopped. I don’t know why I stopped, but I did. The next few years were spent recovering from c-section, navigating breastfeeding twins, homeschooling, tending our home business, and managing life.

And then my body decided it was going to start falling apart. I had Strep for 3 months and it just would not leave. Then I had a knee injury (which has taken over 2.5 years to recover from). Then I got Shingles, had a bought of Mononucleosis, and then Shingles turned into postherpetic neuralgia and become an ongoing nightmare. On top of all of those things from the past few years, we spent most of the past year (2013) investigating  painful lumps in my neck (in and around my right ear) and have yet to find any answers. I kicked this year off with a cold/cough/flu that started right after Christmas and is still going strong (some days are better than others). My immune system is definitely working at a diminished capacity right now.

I know what has always worked for me in the past (low carb), but doing anything more than getting through each day feels like too much. We also have a house full of food related issues and navigating them is stressful at best. Hosanna (5) is allergic to dairy, eggs, and peanuts. Moses (12) is allergic to mushrooms, cheese, and shellfish. Jonah (hubby) is allergic to salmon and raw eggs. Elisha (13) strongly dislikes onions, tomatoes, most chicken, most beef, most pork, and other random things on any given day. I do best on low carb, I don’t have any major food likes or dislikes, except beans. Beans don’t like me; they give me an upset tummy.

I have felt this nudging, tugging in me to try something, anything, to see if I can shake some of these health issues that have been plaguing me for the past few years.

First, I was intrigued by the Daniel Plan and purchased it. It is sitting waiting to be read (and I will read it).

Then I found Trim Healthy Mama. Several friends were talking about it. It kept popping up in my facebook stream. It kept showing up on my Pinterest. Finally a friend had an extensive conversation about it in a Facebook Group I am on. I went straightaway to Christianbook.com and purchased a copy for myself. I could stand it no longer, I had to see what all the fuss was about.

I have joined every Facebook Group (Trim Healthy Mamas, Allergen Free Trim Healthy Mama, Trim Healthy Mamas Beginners, and Very Fluffy Trim Healthy Mamas), I have a Trim Healthy Mama Pinterest Board, I have identified local and online friends who are doing Trim Healthy Mama and having success (and even read many stories of Mamas who quit because it didn’t work for them) and I am eagerly awaiting my print copy of the book.

But for now, I am off to open my Trim Healthy Mama PDF (the one I purchased when I was halfway through writing this post).  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Where is Sochi?

While I have been to Russia, I must admit that I had never even heard of Sochi before. I got curious today and had to see just how far away St. Petersburg (where I lived) was from Sochi. Well, it is quite far. I took a screen shot of the Google Map showing the difference.

The first time I went to Russia, I had the pleasure of visiting Moscow with my family and also travelling by train to St. Petersburg (and back to Moscow).

The second time I went to Russia, I stayed in St. Petersburg and visited Gatchina. I didn’t find out until later that my Visa was only valid for me to be in St. Petersburg and leaving the border of the city was actually a very bad thing to do. Thankfully, God was protecting me from harm.

Oh the stories I could tell about my adventures in Russia. The time went by way too fast and my memories are starting to fade with the years, but it was overall positive and very positive.

The Sochi 2014 Olympics completely snuck up on me and now they are all over the news. We are not a sports crazy family, but we enjoy watching the Olympics. I have some heartstrings tied to Russia because I lived there for several months, many years ago (before marriage and children). Russia will always have a special place in my heart.

Hiccups to the Games

Some of the things people are complaining about don’t seem that unusual to me (because I lived there, not in Sochi, but in St. Petersburg) and they bring back fond (often humorous memories) and prompt discussions with Jonah and the kids.

Toilets

There were a few complaints about people having to share a toilet room with 2 toilets, which is certainly something we are not used to in Canada (or the USA). When I was there, some of the public bathrooms only had holes in the ground and no toilets. Other bathrooms had scary toilets and no seats. Even if a bathroom had a toilet and a seat, I was warned never to sit directly on the seat because of disease.

Water

When I lived in St. Petersburg, I was warned that I should not drink the water without boiling it first. It always looked yellow. Hot water was another curious thing while I was there. Hot water was centrally heated and turned on and off at will (and you never really felt clean after a hot shower or bath).

Road Safety

When I lived in Russia, the roads were riddled with potholes you had to swerve around, and the military stood in almost every intersection. If the lights turned red while you were travelling through the intersection you had to stop where you were and the other cars would drive around you. (Let me just say, I was always a passenger and never a driver).

Internet Safety

Personally, I would not assume that my data was safe if I went to Russia. When I was in Russia, I had to order my long distance phone call 3 days in advance and an operator listened to my calls.

Venue Safety

There have been some questions regarding the safety of the Venues in Sochi. I am praying that there are no serious injuries or deaths due to unsafe venues. If the the hotel construction and other issues that are occurring are any indication, then hopefully my fears won’t be justified.
